Rockmelt akhirnya meramaikan Android, pemain lama tapi baru ini baru saja merilis aplikasi mobile-nya sebagai salah satu agregator dan social network. Kalau ada yang belum familiar dengan rockmelt, dulunya ini merupakan browser yang cukup terkenal di dekstop yang dilengkapi dengan social media tool dimana kita bisa mengintegrasikan akun socialmedia ke browser dengan berbagai kelebihan.

Menjajaki google play kali ini rockmelt tidak lagi sebagai browser. Seperti yang disinggung diawal tadi rockmelt kali ini menjadi aplikasi agregator atau kurator berita, semacam Flipboard atau taptu gitu lah. Dengan menawarkan subscibe dari berbagai kategori berita di Dunia dan diambil dari sumber-sumber berita yang populer dan kredibel. Yaa misalnya kalau untuk teknologi dari The Verge atau mashable gitu lah.

Secara umum aplikasi ini gak jauh berbeda dengan apikasi dengan kegunaan serupa yang udah ada seja dulu. Setelah kamu sign up dan bikin akun, kamu menentukan dulu kategori mana aja ang mau kamu ikuti, rockmelt dalam hal ini mengharuskan untuk memilih paling tidak lima kategori. Setelah itu baru deh aplikasi ini akan menyajikan daftar berita sesuai dengan kategori yang kamu pilih tadi.

Desain yang diberikan pada aplikasi Rockmelt ini cukup menarik, simple dan enak untuk dilihat. Menariknya pada setiap artikel akan diberikan pilihan untuk menanggapi dengan berbagai ekspresi, semacam LOL, WTF dan lain-lain. Tidak lupa juga dengan menyertakan tombol share buat berbagi ke temen-temen kamu diberbagai aplikasi sosial media.

Hal positif yang kita bisa ambil dengan adanya aplikasi rockmelt ini adalah pilihan kita untuk menggunakan berbagai aplikasi agregator berita jadi lebih banyak lagi. Apalagi dengan pengalaman yang dimiliki rockmelt selama ini, sepertinya aplikasi ini akan terus berkembang.

Mantan Country Manager Multiply Indonesia, Daniel Tumiwa, resmi bergabung dengan maskapai Garuda Indonesia untuk memimpin bisnis digital mereka sebagai Vice President of E-Commerce. Bisnis travel di Indonesia sangat menarik untuk diikuti dikarenakan tingginya permintaan layanan terutama dari pasar domestik.

Redwing: Tahun 2013 Tunjukkan Investasi Startup di Indonesia Lebih Banyak dan Lebih Matang

Redwing memberikan infografis kompilasi investasi startup teknologi di Indonesia sepanjang tahun 2011-2013. Redwing mencatat ada 18 investasi high profile yang dilakukan kurun waktu enam bulan pertama tahun 2013. Jumlah tersebut jauh lebih banyak ketimbang jumlah yang sama sepanjang tahun 2011. Di tahun 2012 jumlah investasi yang diumumkan ke publik mencapai angka 20 buah.

Selain jumlah yang berkembang secara signifikan, kebanyakan investasi tersebut merupakan investasi lanjutan (Round 1 dan Round 2), bukan sekedar seed investment. Ini merefleksikan tingkat kematangan startup Indonesia yang lebih baik untuk bertahan dan memperoleh investasi lanjutan. Redwing juga mencatat bahwa lebih sedikit akuisisi yang terjadi setelah mini-boom di tahun 2011, yang memberikan sinyal bahwa investor sekarang memilih untuk berinvestasi jangka panjang.

Untuk nilai investasi, meskipun 2/3 dari total deals dilakukan oleh investor Indonesia dan Singapura, besaran nilainya masih kalah jika dibandingkan dengan investasi yang dilakukan oleh investor Eropa dan Amerika Serikat. Investasi yang dilakukan terhadap grup Rocket Internet (Lazada dan Zalora) yang bernilai puluhan juta dollar setiap putarannya memang tidak tertandingi oleh yang lain. Tokopedia mungkin menjadi satu-satunya startup teknologi di Indonesia yang sudah memperoleh investasi hingga putaran keempat, di mana yang terakhir diperoleh dari Softbank Ventures Korea.

Meskipun memang tidak semua investasi startup Indonesia yang diumumkan ke publik masuk ke dalam infografis Redwing, bisa disimpulkan bahwa seharusnya perkembangan dunia startup di Indonesia sudah menuju ke arah yang tepat.

Investor tidak lagi mencari startup-startup bombastis dengan harapan akuisisi dalam waktu singkat, tapi memilih berinvestasi ke startup yang memiliki outlook bagus dan mampu bertahan setidaknya untuk 2-3 tahun ke depan. Dengan arahan seperti itu, tentu saja penggiat startup juga harus memiliki visi serupa dan memiliki proyeksi jangka panjang serta tidak terbuai dengan mimpi-mimpi startup seperti halnya yang kita dengar dan baca setiap hari di Silicon Valley.

Pertanyaan:

Tadz, mau tanya bab talak. Apakah talak ba’inah kubro itu juga ada masa iddahnya tiga kali haid?

Barakallahufikum.

Jawaban:

Bismillah was shalatu was salamu ‘ala rasulillah, amma ba’du,

Wanita yang ditalak tiga, menjalani masa iddah 3 kali quru’, sebagaimana masa iddah untuk talak pertama atau kedua. Berdasarkan firman Allah,

وَالْمُطَلَّقَاتُ يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنْفُسِهِنَّ ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُوءٍ

“Wanita-wanita yang ditalak handaklah menahan diri (menunggu) tiga kali quru’.”

Makna teks ayat berlaku umum, untuk semua wanita yang ditalak, baik talak satu, dua atau talak tiga.

Disamping tidak dijumpai dalil yang mengkhususkan ayat tersebut, selain karena keadaan tertentu yang telah disebutkan dalam Alquran, seperti: gadis yang belum haid, wanita tua yang sudah tidak haid, dan wanita hamil. Untuk 3 jenis wanita ini, Allah berikan ketentuan iddah yang berbeda,

وَاللاَّئِي يَئِسْنَ مِنَ الْمَحِيضِ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ إِنِ ارْتَبْتُمْ فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ ثَلاَثَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَاللاَّئِي لَمْ يَحِضْنَ وَأُولاَتُ الأَحْمَالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَنْ يَضَعْنَ حَمْلَهُنَّ

“Perempuan-perempuan yang tidak haid lagi (monopause) di antara perempuan-perempuanmu jika kamu ragu-ragu (tentang masa iddahnya), Maka masa iddah mereka adalah tiga bulan; dan begitu (pula) perempuan-perempuan yang tidak haid. dan perempuan-perempuan yang hamil, waktu iddah mereka itu ialah sampai mereka melahirkan kandungannya.” (QS. At-Talak: 4)

Dr. Muhammad Ali Farkus mengatakan,

واعتدادُ المطلَّقةِ ثلاثًا بثلاثةِ قروءٍ هو قولُ عامّةِ الفقهاءِ مِن أصحابِ المذاهبِ، ونقل الجصّاصُ عدمَ الخلافِ في ذلك وهو الصّحيحُ الرّاجحُ، مع اختلافِهم في معنى القرءِ

Iddah wanita talak tiga dengan 3 kali haid, merupakan pendapat mayoritas ulama dari berbagai madzhab. Bahkan Al-Jassas menukil tidak ada perselisihan dalam hal ini, dan itulah pendapat yang benar, yang kuat. Meskipun ada perselisihan di antara mereka tentang makna quru’.

Jake von Slatt is a Massachusetts-based tinkerer, hardware hacker, author, speaker, webmaster, and proprietor of The Steampunk Workshop. Jake seamlessly straddles hands-on proficiency in making 19th-century-inspired contraptions and being an IT specialist with a focus on Linux. His creativity and ability to blend old and new make his work noteworthy. On the pages of MAKE Volume 17, Jake taught us how to make the Wimshurst electrostatic generating machine, a popular 19th-century parlor apparatus, capable of producing the “electric kiss.” Jake is a contributor to The Steampunk Bible and appears on the cover of Vintage Tomorrows.

One project you’re particularly proud of:
1. I am particularly proud of the Wimshurst Machine project I created for MAKE Volume 17. It was a reproduction of a Victorian electrostatic electricity generator that was made exclusively with hand tools and from materials available at your local home center.

What was really gratifying about this project was that many people built their own machines from the plans I published and then sent me pictures and descriptions of how they had done it. I was particularly charmed by an eighth grade girl in India who built a version of the Wimshurst machine for her science class project.

Two past mistakes you’ve learned the most from:
1. Propane is very flammable and eyebrows are important to the appearance of your face.

Jake’s waste oil furnace.

2. A school bus is very heavy and asphalt cannot be relied on to support it when jacking.

Bonus: Stay out of the plane of rotation. I lost the tip of my right pinky finger to the lift-fan of a hovercraft when I was 16 (that’s me at the far right).

Three books you think every maker should read:
1. Cory Doctorow’s Makers. The future is both more mundane and weirder than you imagine. Makers does a great job of capturing that feeling.

2. Marilyn French’s Beyond Power. This book is about feminism, patriarchy, and power. Makers should read it because it discusses subjects we don’t usually talk about, and these are subjects that we must understand if the Maker Movement is to have a lasting impact on society.

3. James Burke’s Connections. It’s a book, but it’s also a TV series from the UK and it’s probably the thing that set me up to be so interested in 19th century technology and steampunk today. Burke began each episode with a modern day piece of technology, for instance: a credit card. Then he traced back through time all of the innovations necessary to bring us to the point where it was possible for this modern convenience to exist.

I am consistently amazed at how much of our modern world is still rooted in 19th century innovation.

Jake’s workshop.

Four tools you can’t live without:
1. My Lenk LSP-100 soldering iron and hand torch. Probably the best $50 I ever spent. I use this for electrical soldering in the field as well as making brass kerosene lamps in the workshop.

2. My Craftsman oxy-acetylene welding/cutting torch. I have done everything with this torch. I use it for making thermocouples by fusing Chromel and Alumel wires together. I have gas-welded countless feet of bedframe angle iron into a myriad of structures. I’ve brazed bicycle frame after bicycle frame, and I cut a 1971 Buick in half to make a utility trailer with the most comfortable ride ever.

3. The small cat’s paw crowbar that I hand-forged from a broken Kryptonite U-lock 15 years ago. There is something about tools that you made yourself that gives you a special joy when you use them.

4. The RepRap Prusa-Mendel 3D printer that I built last year. I am finding more and more uses for this machine and it has convinced me that the age of standardized hardware is over. I absolutely delight in creating custom bits of plastic that do exactly what I want them to do. I can’t wait for the RepRap project to start delving into metal and ceramic fabrication. Open Source hardware is going to revolutionize manufacturing in the same way the Open Source Software revolutionized that industry.

Five people/things that have inspired your work:
1. James Burke for the aforementioned Connections series.

2. My Mom and Dad. Both librarians who taught me how to find things out.

3. A past boss who taught me that in business it is easier to apologize than to ask permission.

4. The industrial and fire artists of San Francisco and Burning Man that taught me art could be totally badass.

5. The 20+ folks who built their own versions of my Wimshurst machine and sent me photos of their devices. There is nothing so inspiring as knowing that your work has inspired others.

[Update Aplikasi] Dolphin Browser 10 dengan Fitur dan Design Baru

Dengan lebih dari sepuluh juta pendownload di Google Play, Dolphin Browser menjadi salah satu browser paling populer di android. Beberapa saat lalu, tim developer aplikasi ini baru saja merilis untuk update terbarunya, dolphin versi 10. Dengan perubahan mayor ada pada User interface dan berbagai fitur tambahan untuk mendukung user experience.

Fitur ini memberikan kemudahan ketika kamu mau membagi sesuatu ketemen-temen kamu di socialmedia atau juga menyimpan suatu halaman web atau lainnya ke cloud. Dalam hal ini dolphin memanfaatkan twitter dan facebook untuk sharing serta evernote atau Box untuk cloud.

Falcon Pro Menghilang Dari Play Store

Baru saja kemarin saya bahas bagaimana caranya mendaftar jadi beta tester Falcon Pro, eh sekarang aplikasinya udah menghilang dari Play Store. Ada apa gerangan? Ternyata Twitter memutus akses API untuk Falcon Pro karena si pembuatnya membuat application key baru untuk versi terbarunya. Jadi gini, beberapa saat yang lalu Falcon Pro telah mencapai limit 100.000 pengguna, lalu si pembuatnya merilis versi baru dengan application key baru juga. Makannya setelah update aplikasi pengguna harus login ulang.

Trik yang dilakukan pembuat Falcon Pro ini ternyata malah menyalahi aturan Twitter, tapi mau gimana lagi, dulu Falcon juga pernah kena kasus yang sama, dan meminta para pengguna yang nggak aktif buat me-revoke Falcon biar pengguna baru bisa menggunakan token kosong adalah bukan cara yang efektif.

Berikut beberapa twit dari akun resmi Falcon Pro setelah kejadian itu. Si pembuat memutuskan menarik aplikasi dari Play Store untuk sementara waktu sampai menemukan trik baru.

Maker Camp Announces new Affiliate Program

Our second annual Maker Camp kicks off July 8. The virtual summer camp for teens runs for six weeks on Google+ and is loaded with great projects, maker interviews, field trips, and fun. Last year we hosted campers from around the world for 30 days of projects which they then could share with other campers via Google+. This year features all new projects and maker adventures from MAKE magazine.

New for this year is our maker affiliate program. Campers can seek out Maker Camp affiliate sites in their local communities (libraries, makerspaces, schools, museums) where they can join their peers and participate in Maker Camp at a physical location. MAKE will provide affiliates with a “playbook” with suggested weekly curricula and materials lists to complete the recommended projects. Affiliates also get other freebies like posters, postcards, t-shirts, stickers, and buttons. The Maker Camp website will include a mapping tool to help campers find local affiliates in their community.

As Maker Camp nears, camp director Em Mota shows future campers around the broadcast facilities.

Sebagai om atau tante yang baik dan sayang sama keponakan, kamu tentunya rela buat nemenin dia pergi seharian. Kamu berpikir hari ini bakalan seru, kamu bisa jalan sama keponakan kamu yang lucu banget, terlebih kamu bisa ngajak kenalan cewek manis dengan pick up line seperti “eh adeknya ya? Lucu banget, seumuran sama keponakanku nih” mantap.

Sampai ada saat dimana keponakanmu yang sangat lucu dan menggemaskan itu bertanya…

“Kok Om/Tante sendirian? Kenapa gak kayak papa sama mama?”

Keponakan kamu memperhatikan sekitar, hari itu adalah weekend, dimana para pasangan pergi bersama. Merasa aneh ketika melihat orang-orang seumuran kamu menggandeng lawan jenisnya, seperti papa dan mamanya gitu. Sementara kamu jomblo. Ya, sendirian. Jomblo.

Cara Jawab: “Om/Tante kan jalannya sama kamu, kalau Om/Tante berdua, ntar kamu sama siapa?”

“Aku pengen punya adek! Caranya gimana?”

Gak lama abis pertanyaan random tersebut, keponakan kamu melihat bayi yang masih di dorong di kereta bayi. Dia gemes. Dan dia nanya tentang cara memiliki adik.

Cara Jawab: “Kamu yakin mau punya adek? Ntar papa mama kamu bakalan lebih sibuk ngurusin adek loh. Terus ntar kalo mainan kamu dipinjem adek sampe rusak, kamu gak boleh marah, emang kamu bisa?”

Perasaan ingin tahunya pun membesar. Seketika dia bertanya penasaran, dia dulu lahir dari mana, dan gimana cara nya.

Cara Jawab: “Kamu lahirnya di rumah sakit, mama kamu dulu yang ngelahirin kamu, kamu baru bisa rasain nanti pas kamu udah gede, kalau sekarang kamu belom bisa, kenapa? Soalnya kamu belum lulus Kuliah.”

Lelah dengan cerocosan keponakan imut kamu, kamu pun berniat pipis. Karena gak mungkin keponakan kamu ditinggal di luar sendirian, keponakan kamu yang manis itu pun kamu bawa masuk ke dalam toilet. Sayangnya, keponakan kamu (yang adalah seorang cewek) belum pernah mandi bareng papa nya. Dia terkejut melihat kamu pipis berdiri dan memiliki benda imut yang mengeluarkan cairan yang tergantung rapi di selangkangan kamu. Dia pun bertanya, mengapa dia tidak memiliki hal tersebut.

Cara Jawab: “Soalnya kamu cewek, om cowok. Apa? Kamu mau punya kayak gini juga? Nanti kalau kamu udah gede, om ajak ke Thailand yaa”

When Dad Makes: The Wisdom Therein

From stories reminiscing about bunk beds and the sentimental value of a plank of wood, to a wealth of images of a homemade arc reactor for one’s son, when Dad makes, it’s a special moment for all of us.

While I’m not a father myself yet, I had a maker dad, I recall the tips he used to say, and I was curious what other words of wisdom and stories were out there.

On Father’s Day this past Sunday you sent us tweets, left comments on our G+ page, and emailed us your stories. Below is just a sample of your tales.

Dad Nick sent us this image on Google+ of a desk he built for his office:

It was a fun project. I had no previous wood working experience. I am satisfied with the way it turned out. But of course there are dozens of things I would do differently/better next time.

You can see he used off-the-shelf plumbing fixtures for the legs and support. That’s a great first woodworking project, and I look forward to seeing what the desk looks like the “next time” you make, Nick!

Since my daughters love horses, since Sunday was Father’s Day, and since we were celebrating my daughter’s half birthday this week (she was born in December); I let my kids persuade me to tackle another project just for them. This Father’s Day weekend, we spent four hours together with some lumber, power tools, and craft supplies. I did the cutting, and with my help the kids did some sanding and screwing, then my oldest daughter drew the eyes and nose on our sawhorse. The horse’s name is Belle. She is great with children and low maintenance. Thanks to an unusually long back, all three can ride at once.

Crafty Madre Nicole sent us these images of pillows she made for her father and father-in-law:

I made this pillow out of a t-shirt I found at a thrift store. I love thrift stores and this one was just screaming my dad. The colors also happen to work with his newly redesigned basement (which flooded last year).

Then I made this one for my father in law. He loves this soda. It won’t match anything in his house but it’s fun.

A Maker Wedding

A wedding invitation, in the form of a record, pressed with a song written by the bride and groom.

Software developer Phil Tucker of Toronto went all out for his wedding, creating some awesome personalized projects: rustic Edison-style hanging light fixtures, an animated Arduino LED matrix lounge table top, vinyl “flexi” record wedding invitations (complete with a lovely acoustic song the couple wrote themselves, called “Invited”), and even a bachelor party wireless accelerometer Stab-O-Meter, named after the Futurama character Roberto, the stabbing robot. He made a wireless accelerometer to measure “the speed and impact of various activities such as swinging a baseball bat, a sledgehammer, a hatchet, a tennis racket — get the idea?”

Phil also made an XBee remote relay as photobooth RF camera trigger — he ended up axing this plan at the last minute, just to reduce complexity, but, he says, “The theory is sound and it worked quite well for days in my living room, taking shot after shot of me and my fiancee lounging on our couch.”

The commitment and hard work he put into these wedding projects bodes well for his marriage!

BREAKING: Stratasys to Acquire MakerBot

Industrial 3D printing and additive manufacturing company Stratasys has struck a deal with Bre Pettis’ MakerBot to merge in a stock-for-stock transaction. Once finished, MakerBot will act as a subsidiary of Stratasys.

The idea is that this merging will accelerate the development of desktop 3D printer, especially as more professionals are using MakerBots for CAD work. The merger includes acquisition of Thingiverse, Makerware software, MakerBot filament, their retail store, the MakerBot 3D Photo Booth, as well as all strategic corporate partnerships.

In response to news of the merger, Stratasys CEO David Reis says,

MakerBot’s 3D printers are rapidly being adopted by CAD-trained designers and engineers,” said David Reis, Stratasys CEO. “Bre Pettis and his team at MakerBot have built the strongest brand in the desktop 3D printer category by delivering an exceptional user experience. MakerBot has impressive products, and we believe that the company’s strategy of making 3D printing accessible and affordable will continue to drive adoption. I am looking forward to working with Bre.

MakerBot was begun as a company based on open-source hardware. Recently they have wavered on that initial stance, and there is no word at this time on whether that will change or not, although the announcement noted “Stratasys and MakerBot will jointly develop and implement strategies for building on their complementary strengths, intellectual property and technical know-how, and other unique assets and capabilities.”

Bre did have this to say about the merger:

The last couple of years have been incredibly inspiring and exciting for us. We have an aggressive model for growth, and partnering with Stratasys will allow us to supercharge our mission to empower individuals to make things using a MakerBot, and allow us to bring 3D technology to more people. I am excited about the opportunities this combination will bring to our current and future customers.

Stratasys Acquiring MakerBot In $403M Deal, Combined Company Will Likely Dominate 3D Printing Industry @ TechCrunch.

Today Stratasys announced that it has acquired MakerBot, as we reported, in a stock deal worth $403 million based on the current share value of Stratasys. The combination of the companies brings together a leader in 3D industrial printing and manufacturing, with the emerging leader in desktop 3D printing, which the companies said in a press release should help drive “faster adoption of 3D printing” across all categories.

MakerBot will continue to operate as a separate company from Stratasys as part of the deal, which is reportedly stock-for-stock transaction. It’ll be a subsidiary of MakerBot, but will serve the consumer and desktop market segment while Stratasys continues to focus on its existing industry placement.

MakerBot was founded in 2009, and has since sold over 22,000 3D printers, with its most recent model making up 11,000 of those sales coming from the Replicator 2, which it launched back in September 2012. That means traction is on the upswing in a big way, something which no doubt helped pave the way for the deal.

How to Stop a Runny Nose

Medical science hasn’t progressed much in the last few centuries. Sure, if you have enough money, you can afford a cure for anything… but you can’t avoid a runny nose.

Learning how to stop a runny nose is an important skill everyone should have because you can’t outrun your nose. The first thing you want to do is clean up the initial mess. After that, you’ll work your way back to the cause.

1 – Find a napkin, tissue, toilet paper, or rag.

You need to clear your nose and clean your hands (and clothes if you’re cleaning a child or unsanitary adult). Find something clean that you don’t mind getting snot all over.

2 –Verify if it’s snot or blood.

You have one of two major problems right off the bat. People can politely overlook someone with a little snot on them, but blood is not looked upon too kindly in public. People are less likely to help bloody strangers.

3 – If weather is extremely windy or dusty, seek a temporary shelter from the elements.

If you’re indoors or the weather is fine, you can blow your nose and clean up wherever you are. Dispose of snotty materials in a trash can, sink, or your pocket or diaper bag, whatever you have handy.

4 – Clean and sanitize your hands.

Whatever is causing your runny nose is best dealt with by clean hands. Even if you’re not sick, you don’t want to spread your germs onto every public surface.

5 – Assess whether or not you need to sneeze.

If you need to sneeze, keep a fresh tissue handy to cover your mouth. If you don’t feel like sneezing, rip a clean tissue in half and roll each half into a ball. Stick a ball in each nostril until you’re sure your nose has stopped running.

6 – Figure out why you have a runny nose.

Whether it’s from a cold, allergies, smoke, or whatever, you should have a general idea (at least one or two) about what may be causing the issue. Most issues are nothing to worry about, but a few may need over the counter medication or even a visit to the doctor.

7 – Keep calm and remain clean.

If you’re in public, you don’t want to start an epidemic, nor have everyone think you’re just some snot-nosed kid. If you stay clean, you can stealthily finish your errands, work, or social obligations. In some situations, it may be best to just leave.

8 – Come up with a plan.

If you’re at a friend’s house that has a cat, you may need to leave the house. If you’re outdoors and experiencing allergies, figure out how to get back to fresh air. If someone is wearing something at work, decide if you can deal with it or have to speak to them. Whatever your individual situation is, figure out what to do.

9 – Keep Hydrated.

No matter what is causing the runny nose, hydration is never a bad thing. Drink water, juices, and tea or eat soups and stews. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and any activities that may dry you out. Hydration is important.

10 – Get some rest.

As soon as you can, get some rest — maybe just adding a 15-minute nap to your daily routine or an extra hour between the night and morning schedules, allowing you to sleep longer. A couple Z’s a day keeps the snot and sneeze away.

11 – Hygiene is key.

Make sure you’re keeping at least daily schedules of showers, shaving, brushing your teeth, flossing, and other grooming habits. Keep your hair either clean, short, or both.

Why You’re Not a Morning Person (and How to Become One)

At 6 AM, most of us are lucky if we have the energy to reach for a cup of coffee. Mornings may be rough, but hold off on sleeping in. There are perks to waking up with the sun, and we've got some tips on making it easier.

Snooze and Lose: The Need to Know

The old “I’m just too tired” complaint may be more than a sorry excuse for waking up late. Research suggests there are biological differences between early larks, who wake up at the same time every morning and feel most active around 9 AM, and night owls, who get more stuff done once the sun goes down [1]. One survey found more than half of Americans fall into the morning category, saying they’re at their “personal best” from 5 AM to noon. And it may get easier to greet the day at dawn as we get older, thanks to body clock changes as we age [2].

It turns out the early bird may get more than the worm. According to self-reports from college students, those who wake up earlier feel more optimistic and proactive than those who rise later. Other studies have found morning larks tend to be harder working and conscientious than night owls. (Still, it’s not clear whether waking up early actually makes someone more productive or optimistic.)

And perhaps the secret to a 4.0 isn’t only hitting the books: Another study of university undergraduates found those who said they function better in the morning received higher grades than those who preferred the evening [3]. That’s possibly because morning risers are more likely to get to class on time or to forgo late-night partying. Researchers also suggest memory may improve during sleep, so getting to bed earlier in preparation for a morning alarm could help those exam notes soak in.

Being a morning person may actually be good for our health, too. When UK researchers questioned adults about their sleep habits, they found people who stay under the covers on the weekdays until 9 AM are more likely to be stressed, overweight, and depressed than those who get up at 7 AM. Another study found teenagers who went to bed and woke up late were less inclined to hit the gym and more likely to be overweight than those who went to bed and woke up early [4]. Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed. (Again, remember it’s not clear that waking up early causes stress, depression, or weight gain.)

Good Day Sunshine: Your Action Plan

Night owls aren’t totally out of luck. One study found evening lovers are more productive than morning people are at night [5]. Still, being a morning person may be more advantageous for most people’s work schedules and routines, since the workday typically starts around 9 AM and the office is (usually!) not open at midnight. Regardless of the situation, there are ways to reset the body clock and happily greet the day:

Get enough sleep. It may seem obvious, but getting those recommended seven to nine hours will make getting up earlier easier. Pro tip? Keep the laptop and other work out of the bed to sleep soundly.

Stay consistent. Try to set the alarm clock for the same time every morning—including weekends. A constant wakeup call may make it progressively easier to jump out of bed.

Start slowly. Pick a new wakeup time and gradually work towards it. Want to wake up at 7 AM but stuck at 8? Start by setting the clock for 7:45, and move down in 15-minute increments until that new time goal is reached.

Skip the snooze. Disrupting sleep an hour or so before actually getting out of bed may disturb our REM cycle, which helps stimulate brain regions linked to cognition. Don’t want to mess with that (or bug a roommate with multiple alarms!). Set one alarm for when it’s time to rise—and maybe another a few minutes later in case you snooze through.

Set some happy sounds. Skip the beeps and blares and set an alarm tone to something soothing or fun. Need an idea? Here are 10.

Let in the light. Research shows a little light may be all we need to reset the body block [6]. A simple solution is to keep the blinds open during the night. Or greet the day and brush your teeth outside!

Eat breakfast. Sleepiness doesn’t disappear just from drinking a cup of coffee. Having enough time for some green eggs and ham (or maybe just a yogurt parfait) will also provide energy, not to mention it’ll boost that brainpower, too.

Hit the gym. Those tired eyes may go away once a morning workout routine is in order. Exercise will definitely boost energy—give these early-bird exercises a try. [7]

Treat yo’self. Have a reward waiting in the a.m. to motivate climbing out of the covers. Dive into some freshly baked fruit and nut bars, or slide into a warm bath instead of taking a quick shower.

J.F.D.I. Sometimes we need to bite the bullet and “just f’ing do it." Researchers have found that creativity may flourish when we feel groggy, so don’t let a little drowsiness interrupt seizing the day!

When the folks at Zipwhip heard that the Raspberry Pi team was moving to a new office, they decided to combine their cloud-based texting service with the power of Pi as a gift to the Pi crew: the world’s first Raspberry Pi-powered, cloud texting-enabled espresso machine, called Textpresso. Yes, that’s right: you can text your coffee order to the machine, and it’ll text you back when your drink is ready. They built it, tested it, shipped it to the Pi offices, and then shared their full how-to with the rest of us caffeine enthusiasts. The machine reportedly works brilliantly, though the only catch is remembering to always have an empty cup on the tray, lest your double shot end up on the carpet.

The Zipwhip team made a custom circuit board to interface between the Raspberry Pi and the main board of a De’Longhi espresso machine. They provide the Eagle files so you can get your own printed. They also use three optocouplers to communicate info from the machine to the Raspberry Pi using a beam of light. Art Basel in Switzerland is arguably the epicenter of the contemporary art scene. As technology creeps in amidst more traditional mediums, illumination has taken the limelight. Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson showcased an LED orb similar to last year’s and American Spencer Finch created a colorful modern twist on 60s modernist lighting with colorful fluorescent tube lighting.

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is best known for his elemental use of basic materials to enhance his large-scale sculptures and installations. For Basel he presented “Your Two-Tone Dawn Light”, a hanging sculpture made of colored glass and LED lights encased in an aluminum and steel skeleton.

Startups and Investors Bet on the Drone Economy @ Entrepreneur.com.

Entrepreneurs and investors are betting on a future full of flying robots that can be programmed to do anything from survey crops or wildlife to delivering vaccines to remote villages in Africa.
It may sound a little like something out of an episode of The Jetsons, but the reality is the Federal Aviation Administration is required to implement regulations to integrate commercial drones into the national airspace by 2015, meaning flying robots are going to become a lot more common in the U.S.

But entrepreneurs aren’t waiting for the FAA deadline before building their startups. The moment is too ripe with opportunity to not jump in the commercial drone business now, those in the burgeoning space say.

“It’s just one of those moments,” said Chris Anderson, co-founder and chief executive of 3D Robotics, which makes unmanned automated vehicles (UAVS). “It’s the economy at scale. Those technologies that used to be incredibly expensive are now very cheap and getting better and faster than any other technology in history.”

Weddings are a beautiful way to publicly declare our love for our partners and establish a spring-board for a solid foundation for the future. For most women, it marks the most important day of their lives.

But if not handled properly, their dream can become a nightmare, and they can lose the joy associated with this special day.
It doesn’t have to be that way.

Today’s lesson will provide for a “happily ever after” start for today’s taxed bride.

*Wedding season is upon us.*
And there’s a new crop of “celebrity” that’s been making the reality TV circuit around this time, that you should avoid at all cost: her name is Bridezilla.
And she can get pretty scary.

*For those unfamiliar, “Bridezilla” is a combination of bride and monster, (Godzilla).*
She makes everyone’s life miserable in the course of planning her “big day” by taking a major stand on “small” issues.
This drama queen is characterized by unreasonable and unrelenting expectations.
And at the end of the day sister, you don’t wanna’ be her.

Instead of making this joyful event a celebratory occasion that takes into account the groom and the other wedding “investors,” everything evolves solely around Bridezilla.

Adding insult to injury, is her rude regard of service professionals, and hurt feelings she causes family and friends in the aftermath.

Of course, it goes without saying that any girl’s wedding day is extremely important; consequently it should ultimately be about her unique wishes and childhood fantasies. Within reason.

Consider the famous words of Dr. Phil: “Do you wanna’ be right, or do you wanna’ be happy?”

Leave Your Keyboard Feet Folded In for Better Ergonomics

We've all seen those little feet that extend out of our keyboards, but did you ever ask what they're really for? It turns out, they're not there for ergonomics.

I recently got a new keyboard and realized I never knew whether I was supposed to extend those feet or not. After a little research, I discovered that they're usually there not for better ergonomics, but to make it easier to see the keys. This little post from keyboard maker BakkerElkhuizen explains it well:

First of all, it is important to distinguish between people who can type ‘blind’ and people who cannot (who use two fingers).

The advantage of extended Feet for non-‘blind’ typers is that they can see the keys more easily. There are no disadvantages of extended Feet for them.
But things are different for people who can type blind, as they do not look at the keyboard while typing. The Feet do not therefore need to be extended. In fact, extending the Feet can put one’s wrists at risk if they are angled back too far. For this reason, blind typers can best keep the Feet retracted and use a relatively thin keyboard. Various studies even have demonstrated a beneficial effect when angling the keyboard away from the user (with a negative incline).

So, if you have to look at the keyboard when you type, extending your keyboard feet (or making some of your own) can be good. If you can type without looking at the keyboard, however, you're ergonomically better off ignoring them (especially on newer keyboards). If they aren't comfortable flat, your chair might be too low—try adjusting it higher and you should notice a difference. Hit the link to read more.

Citi Bike Helmet Navigates to the Nearest Station with FLORA #WearableWednesday

In New York, our new Citi Bike bikeshare program is really taking off. We were inspired to create a helmet that navigates you to the nearest Citi Bike docking station with LED strip inside. We found this nifty Carrera foldable helmet with spaces that just begged to be illuminated (without compromising the smooth outer safety surface). Sparkfun Interviews Beatty Robotics

Robert, Camille and Genevieve Beatty, a family of robotics enthusiasts, gets the celebrity treatment on the Sparkfun Electronics blog about their custom build of a Mars Rover replica.

According to their shop blog the Mars Rover, which is in the final construction and testing phases, is constructed of over 700 electrical components, aluminum parts, and other pieces that they purchased, made by hand, and/or machined on their homemade CNC Mill. In addition to the NASA-style six-wheeled rocker-bogie suspension system and the solar panels, the new Mars Rover is equipped with an infrared camera, a thermal array sensor, eight sonar sensors, and other technology. Using special control software that they provided and programmed, kids and other visitors to the center will drive the Mars Rover remotely through the exhibit’s Mars-scape on a mission to find infrared-emitting rocks that may provide evidence of past life on Mars.

What Works For Others Won’t Always Work For You

Whether in business, love, school or any other area of our life, at one point we’ve all tried to copy the success of someone else only to end up wondering, “why didn’t that work for me?” So why is it that something that has proved so successful for someone else doesn’t work for you just as well? Well, that’s precisely what Jeff Goins explores in this fascinating article.

The biggest lesson he has learned through promoting his own ebooks is that when developing a plan that will work for you, you need to evaluate the plan you’re imitating and then question “why” each factor in there is there. If you can’t say why something is in your plan for success, then it’s unlikely to actually work for you.

Though Jeff’s article is oriented specifically towards writers, the lessons he provides are useful for those looking to succeed in any arena.

I’m James Altucher, and This Is How I Work

James Altucher is all over the place, and I mean that in the best way. He's not only an investor, hedge fund manager, and entrepreneur several times over (to the tune of founding 20 companies), but his writing on business, family, health, and creativity shows up everywhere from The Financial Times to Thought Catalog. He's also written 11 (!) books, the newest of which came out just this month. I had to find out how James does it all and still manages to get nine hours of sleep each night. Here's what he had to say.

Location: I live 70 miles north of New York City, right on the Hudson River. Directly across from my house, across the river, is West Point. I'm not really a nature person so this was the only way to get me to do anything at all outside of NYC.
Current mobile device: Samsung Galaxy Note II. It happens to be a computer with a phone app on it.
Current computer: Samsung Galaxy Note II. Oh, and a Macbook Air.
One word that best describes how you work: Discipline.
Current gig: I've started 20 businesses and failed at about 17 of them. So I guess "persistence" is my current gig. I also write and have had a book out this [month] called Choose Yourself.

The basic idea is that in order to achieve success, or even happiness, you have to choose yourself for it. Nobody else is going to do it for you. When that happens—when you build the foundation for choosing yourself—your current gig becomes magic. I make money now on investments, on advising, on writing, on being a board member for both private and public companies that employ (altogether) over a million people, on speaking, and on a variety of things I could never have imagined I would make a living at. I hope to be a stand-up comic when I grow up. I'm 45 years old.

I've changed careers ten different times since I was 25. I'm heartened by the fact that Henry Ford didn't start the assembly line until he was 60. Raymond Chandler didn't write his first novel until he was 52. Colonel Sanders didn't start franchising until he was 65. And on and on. Everyone wants to know what their "purpose" in life is. This is a man-made myth. We don't have to have a purpose.

Best is to take a step back. To be healthy physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. This makes you a beacon. A beacon has no idea what ships on a foggy night it helps bring to shore. It's just a beacon. This is how you choose yourself. Not "choose yourself for success." But "choose yourself today." Every day.

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

A web browser and a Kindle.

What's your workspace like?

I have a tiny desk with a laptop. I'm surrounded by comics and paintings and action figures that inspire me.

What's your best time-saving trick?

No TV. No third meal of the day. No news. No web surfing. No gossip. With these simple things you save about five hours a day.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

I buy 1,000 waiters pads from restaurant supplies websites for 10 cents a pad. I write at least 10 ideas a day on them. They're great for meetings because I have to keep concise lists and they're always good conversation starters.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

My electric razor. I tend to daydream when I shave myself and I cut myself a lot with a regular razor. One time I had to meet a billionaire who was thinking of putting money in a company I was raising funds for. I cut myself right before the meeting with a razorblade. The entire meeting he had to watch blood oozing out of my chin and then a waiter came over to give me a napkin to put on my chin and the waiter kept replacing the napkin. The billionaire put money in the company.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

I'm good at realizing the things I'm not good at. And for each person I meet, I try to figure out what they're better at than me so I can learn from them. For instance, I'm a poor negotiator. So I'm really impressed when I meet good negotiators that I can learn from.

Oh! I'm really good at sleeping. I used to not be good at sleeping. But now I am. 9-10 hours a day.

What's your sleep routine like?

Around 6 PM I shut down all screens. No computer, phone, TV. No more eating for the day. I read, relax, maybe take a walk by the river. By 8 or 8:30 I'm in bed reading and quickly fall asleep. Then I wake up around 5:30 and begin reading and by 7, I'm writing.

What do you listen to while you work?

I love to listen to a ton of things. BUT, when I'm working I need silence. I think listening to music while working is somewhat equivalent to multi-tasking and I'm not very good at multi-tasking.

I'm an introvert that's very good at pretending to be an extrovert. I'm really scared to meet people in person but I very much enjoy writing to lots of people and speaking in front of large audiences.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

If you don't write your own rules, someone else will. And the results won't be pleasant.

Is there anything else you want to add for readers?

Every day I know that if I take care of myself, everything else will ripple from that to distant shores.
If I stay physically healthy: eat well, sleep well, exercise.
If I stay emotionally healthy: being around positive people who love me and who I love.
If I stay mentally healthy: come up with 10 ideas a day. Read a lot.
If I stay spiritually healthy: always think of the things I feel grateful for and the things that bring abundance into my life. For instance, I'm really grateful to be doing this. Thank you.
